Koichiro Harada

Koichiro Harada is one of the most versatile members of international music community. He studied at the Toho School of Music in Tokyo and completed his education at the Juilliard School of Music under Paul Makanowitzky, Dorothy DeLay and Ivan Galamian.

He has taken part in numerous festivals, including Spoleto, Kuhmo (Finland) and Los Angeles. In 1969, he started the Tokyo String Quartet, and until 1981 was the first violinist of the ensemble with which he toured the whole world and performed at festivals such as South Bank Centre, Tanglewood or Lucerne. Since his conducting debut with the New-Japan Philharmonic Orchestra in 1988, Koichiro Harada has increasingly concentrated on this area of activity.

Harada is Head of String Instrument Faculty at the Toho School of Music in Tokyo. He is also a Musical Director of the Ishikawa Music Academy in Japan, as well as a juror at several international violin competitions: Hanover, Munich, London, Seoul and Melbourne. Koichiro Harada was a jury member of the 13th International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition in Poznań (2006).

For his recordings he has been awarded Grand Prix du Disque at Montreux, the Best Record of the Year Award from Stereo and Gramophone magazines and Grammy Award nominee.
